Prof. Dr. Franz Schausberger – Chairman of the Board
Born in Steyr (Upper Austria) in 1950, Franz Schausberger studied Philosophy in Salzburg, where he also habilitated as professor of Contemporary Austrian History. During his student years he was actively engaged within the official Austrian student association. From 1971 on, he held several positions within the Austrian Peoples Party and by 1979 he had been elected to the regional parliament of Salzburg. Between 1989 and 1996 he was the head of the party group at the regional parliament. Finally, in 1996, he was elected president of the Land Salzburg, a position he held until 2004. At the end of his term in 2004, he founded the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE). He has been the representative of the Land Salzburg at the Committee of the Regions (CoR) in Brussels since 1996, and currently he is a member of the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional Affairs and External Relations (CIVEX). During his term at the CoR, Prof. Dr. Schausberger was nominated several times as rapporteur for official opinions.
On 12 October 2016 Franz Schausberger was appointed Special Advisor of the European Commission for EU enlargement countries, in particular the Western Balkans and the Ukraine. This position is unpaid and Schausberger is assigned to the Department of European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations with Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

Dr. Stefan Eder – Deputy Chairman of the Board
Dr. Stefan Eder is a founding member of the IRE and has been a member of the IRE Board since the incorporation of the foundation. He is also chairman of the Association of IRE Members. As a partner at Benn-Ibler Rechtsanwälte GmbH he practices international business law with a focus on finance, real estate and corporate and M&A work.
Dr. Helmut Falschlehner – Member of the Board
Dr. Helmut Falschlehner was born in Vienna in 1943, studied law at the University of Vienna, and received his doctorate degree in 1973. He worked as auditor for the Regional Financial Directorate of Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland from 1968 until 1974. In 1974, he began working at the Schoeller Bank, where he held various leadership positions until 1997. Falschlehner was a member of the Board of Directors of the Schoeller Bank AG over the last six years. Furthermore, he held several positions within the company, such as member of the managing-board of the Schoeller Holding AG, Leipnik Lundenburger Industrie AG and was also a founding member of the Immofinanz AG. Falschlehner additionally filled several positions in different companies’ supervisory boards, such as the supervisory board of Sugana, Agrana International and Tyrolean Airways. From 1997 until 2005, Dr. Falschlehner was Managing Director of the Schienen-Infrastruktur Finanzierungsgesellschaft (SCHIG). The association conducted the finances of the Austrian rail network and many PPP models in the railway branch were established. From 2006 until 2010, Mr. Falschlehner was engaged in the real-estate sector as a consultant for Immoeast AG, as member of the supervisory board of some real estate associations and as a director of project associations.Dr. Falschlehner was a member of the IRE advisory board from 2006 until 2010 and is now a member of the Board of Directors.
